Areas of Specialty

Dr. Katz specializes in the assessment and treatment of a range of emotional, learning, and behavioral concerns in his work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.  With a broad array of assessment tools at his disposal, Dr. Katz believes that accurate diagnostics leads to the most effective treatment.  Using therapeutic approaches that are informed by best scientific practices, Dr. Katz predominantly uses cognitive-behavioral and family systems models in his counseling work.

Academically, Dr. Katz is an Associate Professor of Psychology at California State University, Northridge, where he chairs the Graduate M.A. Program in Clinical Psychology and serves as the Graduate Coordinator for the Psychology Department.  Dr. Katz teaches graduate courses in child psychopathology, child assessment, and family systems approaches to therapy as well as courses in ethical practice and methods in behavior analysis.  At the undergraduate level, Dr. Katz teaches courses in abnormal psychology, psychometrics and psychological testing, and career options for psychology majors.

Professional Training and Experience

Dr. Katz graduated Magna Cum Laude from Cornell University with a Psychology Major.  His undergraduate research focus produced a published paper investigating Infant Conceptions of Object Motion.  As an undergraduate, Dr. Katz served as a clinical extern at Willard Psychiatric Center and Elmira Psychiatric Center.

For his graduate training, Dr. Katz received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.  His research at Pittsburgh focused on vocal acoustics in mother-infant dyads as well as in the areas of psychophysiology and vocal acoustics of emotion.  As a graduate student, Dr. Katz trained at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in their child assessment clinics and completed his predoctoral internship year at the University of Maryland Medical School, in the department of Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics.

After completing his doctoral degree, Dr. Katz was offered a tenure-track position at California State University, Northridge, where he currently serves as the Graduate Coordinator for the Psychology Department as well as the Chair of the Graduate M.A. Program in Clinical Psychology.  Dr. Katz has been practicing clinical psychology in Southern California since April of 2001.
